What is Gastric Sleeve (Sleeve Gastrectomy) Surgery?

Gastric sleeve, also known as stomach reduction surgery, is one of the most preferred surgeries in obesity treatment. With this surgery, the amount of nutrients taken by the patient is reduced, and the ghrelin (appetite) hormone is removed from the body.

Gastric sleeve surgeries are performed by the laparoscopic (closed) method. The operation, which is performed with the help of camera tools by entering through 4 small holes in the abdomen of the patient, takes approximately 1 hour. Only 4 hours after the operation, the patient can stand up and walk alone. It is necessary to stay in the hospital for 3 days after the operation for observation. Afterwards, our patients return to normal life.

Gastric sleeve surgery is one of the most effective procedures in obesity treatment. After six months, the patient can expect to lose approximately half of his/her excess weight and approximately 70% of his/her excess weight a year later. When the stomach is reduced, the patient will eat less than normal, as they will need less food to feel full.

Who is Eligible for Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery is suitable for anyone who has tried to lose weight before, failed, and whose body mass is 35kg / m2 and above. The decision for those who have a body mass index between 30kg / m2 and 35kg / m2 is made according to whether they have weight-related diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, asthma, etc.). The final decision regarding the operation is made after the doctor’s consultation.

What are the Advantages of Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Obese individuals have a high risk of having or developing weight-related diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. While a 90% improvement in weight-related diseases of patients who lose weight with gastric sleeve is observed, the risk of developing weight-related diseases is prevented.

Gastric sleeve surgeries are performed laparoscopically with up-to-date technologies. In this way, the absence of large incisions speeds up the healing process. If you prefer an experienced surgeon in sleeve gastrectomy, you will have a comfortable surgical process.
