Constipation After Sleeve Gastrectomy
Since less food is consumed after a sleeve gastrectomy, an insufficient amount of fiber can be obtained, resulting in a reduction in the quantity and frequency of defecation. Constipation is more common during this time, especially as the first fifteen days after the operation involve feeding on liquid foods without consuming fiber-rich foods.
When food variety increases and fiber-rich foods are consumed, stool is produced, leading to normal bowel movements.
In treating constipation, we first need to change our lifestyle.
1) We should consume at least 2 liters of water per day.
2) We should engage in regular physical activity every day. Regular brisk walking is ideal.
3) We should consume 2-3 apricots or dried figs per day.
4) The foods we consume should be high-fiber foods rather than carbohydrates.
Sleeve gastrectomy surgeries can lead to constipation due to the altered digestive system. It is important to initially take non-pharmacological measures to relieve constipation, such as adequate fluid intake, a high-fiber diet, and physical activity.
If the symptoms do not improve with these measures, pharmacological therapy can be considered. There are medications that can promote bowel movements or soften the stool. However, it is important not to use such medications long-term and only under medical supervision.
It is advisable to consult with a doctor or nutrition expert if you experience persistent constipation issues after sleeve gastrectomy surgery to discuss suitable treatment options and receive individual recommendations for your specific situation.
