A sleeve gastrectomy turns the stomach into a narrow tube roughly the shape and size of a banana. Two things change at once. You can physically eat far less, and you feel like eating less — because the part of the stomach that is removed, the fundus, is where most of your body's ghrelin is produced. Ghrelin is the hormone that tells your brain you are hungry, and after surgery your levels of it fall sharply.
That hormonal change is why a sleeve works where dieting did not. You are not relying on willpower against a hunger signal that never switches off.
The operation is laparoscopic — performed through four or five small incisions using a camera, with no large cut. You are under general anaesthetic throughout. Most patients are helped to their feet within the first hours of waking, because moving early is one of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of clots.

You also need to be 18 or over, fit enough for general anaesthetic, and able to commit to lifelong dietary change and vitamin supplementation.
When we say no
We turn patients away, and we would rather do that than operate on someone who should not be operated on. A sleeve is not the right operation if you have untreated severe reflux or Barrett's oesophagus — a gastric bypass is usually the better choice there. Active substance dependence, an untreated eating disorder, or a medical condition that makes anaesthesia unsafe all need resolving first.

A sleeve works, and it works for most people who have it. It is also permanent surgery with consequences you carry for the rest of your life. Here are both columns, neither of them dressed up.

Risks
- Staple line leak — the most serious complication of a sleeve. It is uncommon, and under our protocol, with an intraoperative leak test before closing, we have not recorded one in years of operating. Uncommon is not the same as impossible, which is why you should know what the symptoms of a leak look like before you fly home.
- Reflux — a sleeve can cause it or make existing reflux worse. If you already have significant reflux, a gastric bypass is usually the right operation instead. We will tell you that before we book you in, not after.
- Nutritional deficiencies — vitamin B12, iron and vitamin D. Supplements and periodic blood tests are lifelong, not for the first year.
- Weight regain — it happens to some patients between years two and five, almost always tied to habits rather than a surgical failure. We have written in full about why weight comes back after a sleeve and what actually works. A second operation is one answer, and rarely the first one.
- It cannot be undone — the removed part of the stomach does not come back. Any later correction is a second operation, not an undo.
Lowering the risk is not about the country. It is about the surgeon operating on you personally, a JCI-accredited hospital, and a protocol that does not skip the preoperative approvals — cardiology, chest medicine and anaesthesia — however far you have already travelled.

A gastric sleeve Turkey operation is not only about weight — it is a metabolic one. For many patients the conditions that came with the weight improve alongside it, and some resolve entirely. Here is what we actually see, and what we will not promise you.
Type 2 diabetes: the change starts before the weight does
A sleeve gastrectomy reduces insulin resistance and helps regulate blood sugar. What surprises most patients is the timing: blood-sugar control often improves within days of surgery, well before meaningful weight has come off. That is a hormonal effect of the operation itself, not a consequence of being lighter.
Many patients reduce their medication substantially, and a meaningful proportion come off it altogether. In the STAMPEDE trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, surgical patients maintained far better glycaemic control at five years than those on intensive medical therapy alone.
What predicts a good result: the shorter you have had diabetes, and the less insulin you currently use, the more likely remission becomes. High blood pressure: often the first medication to go
High blood pressure is one component of the metabolic syndrome that obesity drives. When the weight comes off, the pressure very often follows — many of our patients reduce their dose within the first months, and a good number stop antihypertensive medication altogether under their GP's supervision.
The wider evidence supports this. The Swedish Obese Subjects study, the longest-running controlled study of bariatric surgery, found significantly lower long-term mortality in surgical patients — driven largely by reductions in cardiovascular and diabetes-related deaths.
Important: never stop or reduce blood-pressure medication on your own. As you lose weight your dose will likely need adjusting — that is a conversation for your GP, with the discharge summary we give you in hand.

None of this is a guarantee. Outcomes depend on how long you have had the condition, how you eat afterwards, and factors no surgeon controls. Any medication change belongs to the doctor who prescribed it — we give you the documentation to make that conversation straightforward.

Most gastric sleeve Turkey packages advertised to UK patients move you into a hotel within 24 to 48 hours of surgery. Ours never does. Every one of Dr. Arayıcı's patients stays four nights in our JCI-accredited private hospital, until the day of discharge, with nursing staff on the floor, continuous vital-sign monitoring and a surgeon in the building.
This is the single biggest reason our price sits above the cheapest packages you will find. The first 72 hours after a sleeve gastrectomy are when a staple-line leak would present, and a leak recognised in a hospital bed is a manageable complication. A leak recognised in a hotel room is an emergency that starts with an ambulance.
You are not paying for a hotel you did not need. You are paying for the four nights you did.
The honest version
Gastric sleeve on the NHS vs. Turkey
Before comparing gastric sleeve Turkey prices, check the NHS first. If you qualify for bariatric surgery on the NHS, that is very often the right choice, and we will tell you so during your consultation. NHS surgery is free at the point of use and your aftercare sits inside the same system that will look after you for the rest of your life.
The difficulty is qualifying and then waiting.
What the NHS route generally requires
- A BMI of 40 or above, or 35 and above alongside a serious weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea
- Documented completion of a tier 3 weight-management programme before most trusts will even refer you
- Many patients spend well over a year in that pathway before a surgical date is discussed
Patients choose gastric sleeve Turkey clinics for three reasons: they were assessed and fell just outside the BMI threshold, they completed the pathway and are still waiting, or they were told the wait would be measured in years and their health could not wait that long. Aftercare
What happens when you get home to the UK
You will fly home with a full discharge summary written in English: your operative note, the size of the bougie used, your histology result, every medication given, and our direct contact details. Hand a copy to your GP at your first appointment and keep one yourself. This document is what allows a UK clinician to treat you quickly and correctly if anything is ever needed, and it is the single thing most patients returning from abroad do not have.
Your follow-up with us runs for twelve months by WhatsApp and video call, at no extra cost. That covers your diet progression through the liquid, puréed and solid phases, your vitamin protocol, and any question you have at eleven o'clock at night in the first difficult weeks.
Where our reach ends, and what happens then
We are also direct with you about the limits. If you develop an acute complication in the UK, you must go to A&E — your NHS trust will treat you, as it treats any patient presenting with an acute abdomen, and your discharge summary is what makes that treatment fast. We will speak to your treating team directly if they want to reach us. Any revision or corrective surgery that we are responsible for, we perform ourselves in Izmir at no charge.
